I love rose wine and I love all porn, so I was immediately intrigued by the new Dancemakers presentation, as it is entitled Rose Porn.
Created by Resident Artist Zoja Smutny, with music by Toronto DJ and record producer Victoria Cheong, ROSÉ PORN is a live cinematic sound work in which the audience plays part in making the architectural space. The work is intended for an intimate audience, where people are invited to circulate — to sit, to walk, to lie down, to close their eyes, to take pictures, to check out . . . Throughout the duration of an hour, the performers build environments in which a “dance” or “song” can occur. Where and how these installations take form varies, always in relation to who is in the room, and what shape the room takes according to who is there.
Smutny`s work has appeared in Cannes, New York, Prague, Athens, Berlin, Vienna, Montreal, and even Halifax, so it’s lucky that we Torontonians have a chance to see her work. Cheong is the perfect collaborator, one who mixes music with projections. Their work seems ideal for Dancemakers, which encourages artists to deconstruct established dance conventions that challenge both the dancer and the audience. So even if neither rose nor porn is involved, it still sounds like a pretty interesting evening of theatre
