My Gay Toronto - Bellini's 8 1/2

New Star Raph Solo

by Paul Bellini

Raph Solo is a good-looking British pop star with several songs to his credit. He’s also a gay man whose newest single is called Star. It’s a tribute to his mother, who raised him and cared for his cancer-stricken father.

And yes, he does take off his shirt in the video, which depicts Raph as a photographer taking pictures of a beautiful woman. He’s so good at his job that not only does she love the pictures, she loves him as well. In the end, he breaks the news that he is gay, and she seems surprised and a bit disappointed. I understand, Raph. I get the same thing all the time.

Things weren’t always so rosy for Raph. Just a few years ago, he fought his feelings for men and even underwent reparative therapy in an attempt to cure himself of his homosexuality. In the end, it was more damaging to his self-esteem. “It made me feel like a failure because no matter how hard I tried, I could not change my feelings. I strive to be 100% real. That’s the whole point of the video and my coming out at the end.”

Star is included on Raph’s CD, The Anonymous Icon, available on iTunes. In the meantime, check out the video for Star here:
