Like Tom of Finland, Bob Mizer was a pioneer in the world of gay male erotica. He started taking pictures of sexy servicemen just after WWII and built an empire that lead to hundreds of thousands of images and films. Mizer never had to operate in shame - his entire family, including his mother, helped out with the business, which consisted mostly of mailing photo sets and film loops to drooling gay men across North America.
We owe Mizer a huge debt, although nowadays, where most guys post nude photos of themselves on various hook-up sites, it all seems very ‘so what.' But Mizer’s work is suprisingly gorgeous. A talented photographer, you don’t appreciate his skill until you look at his non-erotic portraits. Anyway, I don’t have to defend his work. Until the early '70s, his was the only gay porn you could get, and a lot of it still turns me on.
