A friend of mine travels all over the world, and everywhere he goes - even in places like Egypt and Turkey - he finds the gay scene. His revelation - that gay men the world over behave more or less exactly the same.
That sameness is what allows us to immediately relate to gay movies and TV shows from non-English speaking countries. Recently, I discovered a German web series called Kuntergrau. It’s about a group of totally adorbs boys in Cologne who fuck and fight and fool around. It looks great, as does the cast, all between the ages of 17 and 27, and all located around the “anyway” Youth Center in Cologne.
Kuntergrau is basically a slick looking soap opera. The characters are twinks who hook up a lot, but they face all the usual young gay problems, like cheating, discrimination, oppressive parents, and HIV. Anyone can relate to their problems.
The first season on YouTube attracted over 300,000 views. Knowing that the series would have international appeal, the makers subtitled it Season One. You can watch it at https://www.youtube.com/kuntergrau.
Now, for Season Two, the producers have reached out for crowdfunding. If you’re interested, check out the links below.
