I’m not really angry about Black Lives Matter hijacking the Pride parade. It’s not like they don’t have a point. Though I doubt that wearing black make-up on a hot summer’s day is going to catch on. What they did was inflammatory, but I found all the straight girls at the event far less easy to deal with.
Bottom line is, Pride has become almost totally irrelevant to the very people who started it. Most gay guys of my age group actually leave town, or stay home and pretend it is not happening. I still think that Pride is a wonderful opportunity to get trashed with friends in public, so it retains a purpose for me.
And while I admit that what Black Lives Matter did was showstopping theatre, I did take umbrage several days later when one of the organizers, Janaya Khan, wrote an opinion piece for NOW Magazine.
In it, she states “… Stonewall, the riot led by transwomen and queer people of colour …”
Holy fuck. I am getting sick about hearing this ridiculous assertion. Check out the photos. There are trans types, yes, and there are people of colour, certainly, but there also seem to be a lot of white boy faces in those photos. So saying Stonewall was a transgender riot is a little like saying the transgender movement defeated Hitler. You can say it all you want, but it doesn’t actually make it true. It’s as ridiculous as holding a symposium on the 1981 bathhouse raids and then asking old white women and dykes to host it.
To be sure, NOW has never met a loony left wing opinion it didn’t like. If they had been around in Lincoln’s time, they would have asked John Wilkes Booth to write an op ed piece about what it was like to shoot the President. I far prefer reading The Toronto Sun, whose Sue-Ann Levy declared that the group should change their name to Nobody Else Matters. Sad, but true, for when it comes to activism, we all know that there can be no other way.
