Pride Toronto launches recruitment drive in search of 1,800 weekend volunteers to Come OUT and VOLUNTEER!
TORONTO, ON, May 8, 2015 | With Pride Toronto’s 2015 festival just seven short weeks away, the organization has kicked off it’s annual recruitment for weekend volunteers – the individuals that make Pride happen. The largest pride celebration in North America, Pride Toronto is currently seeking 1,800 volunteers to fill roles in crowd engagement, logistics and community events.
“The most unique part about our festival is that it’s completely volunteer driven,” says Matthew Halse, Pride Toronto’s Volunteer Program Manager. “The success of Pride Toronto is dependant on the special skill sets that our volunteers bring to the table, which is why we are asking for Toronto’s support to help throw the best Pride yet.”
To successfully throw a festival the size of Pride Toronto, the help and long hours of many dedicated and passionate individuals are needed.
“It takes a lot of volunteers on each team to help with the planning and organization of Pride Toronto,” says Calvin Barr, Team Lead for the Pride Toronto Weekend Volunteer Program. “The donations team, for example, requires 220 individuals to make sure everything runs smoothly.”
In order for Pride Toronto to continue it’s operational success following the prestigious WorldPride 2014 event, the organization is looking to fill its 1,800-volunteer goal over the next seven weeks. With 29 different volunteer teams – including such teams as Trans* pride, dyke march, family pride and festival research – Pride Toronto provides an array of opportunities for individuals to get involved in this year’s festivities and lend their skills.
“The best thing about volunteering for Pride Toronto is that you are involved in a majority of the planning and decision making,” says Wendy Borrison, Team Lead of Pride Toronto’s Welcome Centre. “Our team came up with an Instagram scavenger hunt to create an interactive experience for everyone coming to the festival, which we are very excited about seeing come to life.”
Pride Toronto is a registered not-for-profit organization that exists to celebrate the history, courage, diversity, and future of our communities, whose mission is to hold an international celebration incorporating activism, education and culture of global communities.
One of the premiere arts and cultural events in Canada, and the largest pride celebration in North America, Pride Toronto’s 10-day festival takes place each year during the end of June. Highlighting Canada’s continued progress in human rights and Toronto’s diversity and dynamism, Pride Toronto showcases performances and extensive cultural events to create social, cultural and political impact.
