While not a fan of reality TV or of TV competitions, there is a burgeoning television star that can't be resisted. Part of that is just that Nyle Dimarco, intense blue eyes and sculpted hairy chest and abs, is extraordinarily good-looking. But most television performers are either freakishly good-looking or just, like Mama June and the Kardashians, freakish. What is so appealing about Dimarco is that his tabloid headlines are not scandalous but all in pursuit of concrete goals.
Dimarco won the 2015 edition of America's Next Top Model and used that as a platform to promote his pet cause of advocating for Deaf culture. Dimarco has been deaf from birth and American Sign Language, lip reading and nonverbal conversation are his native tongues. He believes that this helps with modelling as he is used to communicating visually.
Dimarco also earned admiration when he casually came out as sexually "fluid" and set gay hearts aflutter. While comfortable as a object of gay desire, Dimarco has also referred to a girlfriend using an ambiguous tense. No matter as he stepped up and became the first Dancing with the Stars contestant (yes, he is pursuing a reality TV career) to perform a same-sex dance - a tango no less. That this followed closely on the heels of parent network ABC refusing to greenlight a production number, featuring Ariana Grande and Meghan Trainor, just makes Dimarco's activism more appealing.
Previously Dimarco had included a brief silent passage in a DWTS routine to let the audience feel what he feels while dancing. He is working the deaf contestant in a dance competition for all it is worth but we can be grateful that he's also doing LBGT activism with the same casual grace. And that he is also blessing us with many shirtless performances with this Tarzan routine being one of the more memorable.
