COLOR SCARE…

I am constantly hearing about people being afraid of colour:  "We’re not sure what we like or we are afraid of putting the wrong colours together in the same space."  These are understandable fears.

Colour is all about balance and harmony.  You want a light tone, medium tone, and a dark tone to help with balance.  A great way to achieve this is by mixing neutrals (whites, beiges, tans, and greys), then add one vibrant colour and instantly you have a well rounded space.  Avoid matching everything as colours only need to complement one another, not constantly match.

You can’t go wrong with one bold colour in a space but keep it to a moderate amount:  more than one vibrant colour requires more thought and input so that you don’t go awry.  This can be accomplished by painting an accent wall, adding colourful accessories and furniture, or through your carpeting or flooring.  If you are working on your outdoor space for summer, this is when you can really have fun.  These areas are more casual and relaxed, so go bold with your patio furniture cushions & liven up your table with some vibrant placemats.

A quick internet search for colour emotions will bring up an exhaustive array of resources that will help you understand what colours signify and what they mean to people.  This can help if you are trying to create your calming oasis or your lively entertaining space.  You can also research the colour wheel and get more information on which colours complement one another.

Don’t dread the home décor or home improvement store and relax while standing in front of a thousand paint options:  get out there and have fun with colour!
